About Our Coaches

Cody Fries

Teams: 2016, 2017

Cody is a dedicated hockey enthusiast with over 30 years of experience as a goalie and more than 10 years of experience in goalie coaching and teaching hockey. Having grown up in Wisconsin, he played hockey through varsity and has continued his passion by supporting the sport through his two kids in the Farmington Youth Hockey Association. His journey from player to coach has been driven by a love for the game and a commitment to developing young talent.

Ian Bing

Teams: 2014, 2015

Ian has been dedicated to coaching hockey since 2012. He began his coaching journey with the Apple Valley Youth Association Batam A team from 2012 to 2016. Since then, he has continued his coaching career with the Farmington Association at the ponies, mites, and squirt levels, where he currently coaches. Ian is also deeply involved with Beast Hockey, serving as a co-program director and coaching both the 2014 and 2015 Beast teams.

His passion for hockey extends beyond the game itself; he strives to develop not only skilled players but also exceptional teammates and individuals. Ian’s commitment to fostering a lifelong love for the sport is evident in his coaching approach.

Ian’s own hockey journey started in Cannon Falls, where he played for Farmington Youth and High School, graduating in 2003. He then pursued his playing career at Augsburg University (NCAA Division III), graduating in 2007.

Josh Askew

Teams: 2014

Josh has been passionate about hockey since he first hit the ice at the age of 5. He grew up playing in the Rosemount Hockey Association and later played for Rosemount High School. In 2006, he joined the Inver Grove Heights Junior Gold Team and won the state championship. His love for the game continued into his collegiate career during his two years playing at North Dakota State University (NDSU).


Hockey has shaped who he is, instilling values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. He is now incredibly excited to continue sharing his love for the sport with his two boys, nurturing their passion for hockey as they grow and looks forward to seeing them fall in love with the sport he holds so dear.

Nathan Dapper

Teams: 2014

Growing up Nathan lived at the rink, whether there was ice or not. Nathan played hockey through Peewees in Sleepy Eye before moving to Farmington. There, he played Bantams and High School hockey. Nathan has been teaching in Prior Lake for the past 20 years, and his dedication to youth extends beyond the classroom. So much so that, after his own days as a player, he became a coach. In 2009, he began coaching youth hockey in Farmington when his oldest son was a Mite. Nathan then helped coach his other younger sons’ teams for the next twelve years. In 2018 Nathan began his high school hockey coaching career with the Burnsville girls program. A year later, he joined the Farmington High School Boys coaching staff. As a high school coach Nathan has spent every summer since 2018 coaching summer hockey in Farmington. He is excited and passionate about giving back to the game and the Farmington program that has given him so much. 

Kelly Jensen Kelly

Teams: 2014

Kelly grew up playing hockey in Eden Prairie, competing from the Squirt level through high school. She proudly skated on Eden Prairie’s first-ever all-girls team, helping pave the way for future generations. Among her favorite memories are competing in the Minnesota State High School Tournament during both her junior and senior years.

After high school, Kelly continued her hockey career at the University of Wisconsin–River Falls, where she played for four years while also earning her teaching degree.

Since graduating, Kelly has remained deeply involved in the hockey community, coaching with FYHA and working with players at the Pony, Mite, and Squirt levels for both girls and boys. Passionate about giving back to the sport that has given her so much, Kelly continues to inspire young athletes and foster a love for the game. 

Chad Urdahl

Teams: 2015

Chad is a native of Litchfield, where his hockey career began and advanced through high school, three junior seasons, the Div. III college level, and countless men’s leagues. He has coached hockey as a youth assistant and at summer camps, along with conducting private skating lessons in the past. In recent years, he has coached his son and his peers in the FYHA system and joined the Beast in 2024. He is a firm believer in the value of hard work, discipline, and attention to detail on the ice—while also having fun. These positive traits are central to his coaching style with the Beast as they help their players develop skills, stretch their boundaries, and learn to be good teammates—on and off the ice.

Derek Olson

Teams: 2015

Derek brings a lifelong passion for hockey to the Beast Hockey Club coaching staff. He’s been on the ice since the age of 4 and went on to play Junior Varsity and Varsity hockey for the Bloomington Kennedy program, along with several summer AAA teams during his development.

Today, Derek stays involved in youth sports by coaching both hockey and baseball for his son, Wyatt. He believes the strongest players are built through fundamentals, effort, and teamwork—and he’s excited to bring that mindset, along with his energy and focus, to the Beast Hockey Club program. 

Tom Klein

Teams: 2015

Tom Klein is a passionate coach with more than two decades of experience developing players from first-time skaters to high school athletes competing at the AAA level. He has coached across every age group, including Mites through High School, and served in multiple Head Coach roles at the U10, U12, and U15 levels, guiding teams to District and Regional Tournament appearances and championships. At the high school level, Tom coached with the MN IceCats, competing in AAA events including the NAHA Tournament in Vermont. Known for his focus on skating development, strong fundamentals, and complete player growth, Tom is committed to helping athletes improve in all aspects of the game.

 

In addition to his on-ice leadership, Tom has been an active contributor to the hockey community, serving as Director at Large for TAYHA and in leadership roles with the Tartan Girls Hockey Booster Club. A former collegiate player at Bemidji State University (1989–1993) who played his high school hockey in Coon Rapids, Tom continues to compete in leagues and tournaments today. His lifelong passion for the game, combined with his experience as both a player and coach, allows him to connect with athletes and foster a positive, competitive environment focused on development and success.

Brent Johnson

Teams: 2016

Brent is a former hockey player who lettered three years at Richfield High School and has been involved in the sport ever since. For the past 16 years, he has been a high school hockey referee and has spent over three years coaching hockey, in addition to more than five years coaching other sports. His passion lies in fostering both individual and team growth. He is also a proud parent, with a son in Mites and a daughter starting her journey in ponies with Farmington.

Scott Mack

Teams: 2016

Scott hails from East Grand Forks, MN, where he was a four-year letter winner for the Green Wave. In his senior year, he helped lead the team to their first Section 8 championship since 1982 and a fifth-place finish at the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament. After high school, he continued his hockey career by playing junior hockey for the Butte Irish of the American Western Hockey League and college hockey at the University of Minnesota-Crookston in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association. He has been a coach for the past two years and is the proud parent of two boys who are part of the Farmington Youth Hockey Association. He aims to bring his experience and passion for the game to the next generation of players.

Drew Tolzman

Teams: 2017

Drew’s love for hockey started in 1st grade at the local outdoor rinks and continued through his high school varsity career. He has remained closely connected to the game through various men’s leagues and brings six years of youth hockey coaching experience. Drew is passionate about helping players develop strong fundamentals, hockey IQ, confidence, and a lasting love for the game.

In addition to hockey, Drew has coached other youth sports in the local community. He and his wife, Ashley, have three children — Geno (10) and Wells (8), who both play in the Farmington Youth Hockey Association, and their daughter, Fern (6).

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Drew believes that skill development, work ethic, and a strong team-first culture are essential to building successful players and teams.

Meghan Ryan

Teams: U10

Meghan began playing hockey at the age of 9 and joined the high school team in 8th grade at Simley in Inver Grove Heights. She became involved in the Farmington youth hockey program when her daughter started playing at the age of 5, and her daughter is now 9. Meghan is passionate about the youth girls program and is dedicated to developing well-rounded athletes. She enjoys teaching kids and watching their love for the game grow.

Scott Olson

Teams: U10

Scott started youth hockey at age 4 in IGH and played through varsity for Simley High. After high school he played Junior hockey in Billings, MT. He then started coaching youth hockey in Eagan & Farmington ranging from the squirt level to Bantam A level for 15 years. For the past 3 years he has been involved in coaching the Farmington U8 program. His passion is helping kids develop their hockey skills and encourage them to go beyond their comfort zone both on and off the ice.
